Not zero subsidy, there’s federal and state incentives.

Texas is trying to get rid of that this legislative session, though. They’ve also introduced legislation to make new work more difficult, permitting-wise.

As for nuclear, SMRs are as yet vaporware. Maybe in 10 years? Nuclear also has the highest levelized cost of electricity of any currently known form of generation. Tech bros just like nuclear because they can’t be bothered to comprehend intermittency or capacity factors

Nuclear output, when running at absolute best can’t effectively shift fast enough with changes in demand due to temperatures/otherwise
Meaning, they are commonly unable to reduce or increase output without having major issue
They like to just keep slow and steady

Yep. I used to be a part-time energy market intelligence analyst working with PJM data. Day 1 they tell me never to adjust output in the spreadsheet model for nuclear plants e.g. Braidwood -unless- we get explicitly notified of downtime for repairs, v fast demand shifts were usually gas-turbine.

Yeah, S Korea has occasionally shifted away from nuclear (complicated political back-and-forth), which they used to plan to use a lot more of because it's not exactly like they're sitting on vast petrol reserves. (Apparently two-thirds of power generation is thermal.)

Interconnection queues! Permitting! So much of that happens at the state and local utility level. And takes years. A lot of the power issues we’ll be facing in the next couple years are because you have one really slow industry (generation) hitting up against one really fast-moving one (tech)

Oh, you’re making a zinger based on a very shallow understanding of a complicated issue! Actually, the problem (beyond lack of generation & E-W transmission capacity) was ERCOT’s previous refusal to connect to other states’ grids, which left it up shit creek during severe weather events.

In UK we subsidise 30,000 MW of gas generation to keep it ready for days without wind/solar/batteries

It’s a good deal overall, ideally never burn gas but have the ability to do so

It’s a very good model
