Depressingly likely that he’s hung up because the technical term has the word “deficit” in it and it causes his cue-ball brain to short circuit. He can’t process that as anything other than us = behind. If economists said “the U.S. has a rich-nation advantage over its trading partners” he’d move on.

Again: there's no evidence Trump understands what a trade deficit is. He consistently describes it as "a subsidy" to foreign countries, as them "ripping us off."
He similarly doesn't understand those goods & services can't be replicated in the US at the same cost. Some can't be replicated at all.

It could still be immensely stupid. But I keep wondering if there’s something other than the idea that we’re “losing.”
define it/explain it/etc
without saying “deficit” ask if it’s good to import raw materials cheap to export as expensive finished goods
or if it’s good to import food X that we don’t grow
