It is possible to run a social media website with relatively few or even no ads, but the money to keep the servers running comes from somewhere
The real problem is thus: how do you gather funds from users to pay for the operation of the site when most users fail to recognize the value they get from it?
Personally I think there's value in an Eve Online model: pay users in site credit for high quality content.
Bluesky is disproportionately populated by people who think the tech-bros and right wing lunatics on X are wrong about pretty much everything. We're not changing any minds over here.
