These are all distances for balls hit with a launch angle of 24-32 degrees (aka, the ideal launch angle for maximum distance) The second chart is the distance relative to the baseline The deviation from the baseline is PREDOMINANTLY outside of the batter's control, because...

Pirates swept the Phillies. It was 2-1 again. With Harper injured, Phils offense has disappeared, so team lost three well pitched games. Cubs are next … which will be tough sledding. The Phillies team that played so well in early May has been replaced by a bunch of hackers wearing Phils uniforms.

Bill Atkinson, who created HyperCard and many of the seminal applications for the early Macintosh, has died at 73. Bill was one of my heroes, a pioneer from the era when technology empowered the people who used it. They don’t make tech guys like Bill anymore. RIP. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/07/t...

Phillies got walked off by Pirates, 5-4; 7th loss in last 9. Wheeler was on paternity leave, forcing a bullpen game. Bullpen was good enough, but the offense and fielding were dreadful … again. Phils have three OFs who can field well, but constantly platoon, killing defense w/ no offensive benefit.

Phillies were humiliated by Toronto 9-1. For the 2nd start in a row, Jesus Luzardo got crushed: 8 earned in 2 1/3. Good velo. Changed speeds. Generally good location. But the Jays crushed even the pitcher’s pitches. Is Luzardo tipping? Our offense disappeared again. Chris Bassitt was Cy Young today

Phillies got walked off by the Jays, 2-1. Mick Abel’s second MLB start was as good as the first. Phils took a 1-0 lead on a Casty HR. A bad fielding play cost Abel a run in the 6th. Both bullpens were strong, but Jordan Romano made a mistake in the 9th that let Vladdy Jr score the winning run.

Phillies beat Blue Jays 8-3, with 6 runs in the 1st inning. Turner hit 2 HRs and Harper 1 (in his 1st AB after Strider nearly broke his elbow). Cristopher Sanchez had command issues, especially on his change, but pitched 6 innings of 4 hit, 1 run ball. 4 BB were the issue. 4 game losing streak ends.

Phillies got swept by Milwaukee, 5-2. They had a 2-1 lead when Trea Turner made a catastrophic error on a play that should have ended the inning; instead it led to 3 runs. Baseball is an unforgiving game. Phils are in a 4 game losing streak, with 3 games coming in Toronto, then the Mets at home.

Phillies lost 17-7 to MIL. Jesus Luzardo gave up 12 ER in 3.1, raising his ERA by a run and a half (it was ~2.15). The offense did nothing until the 9th. Rojas and Marsh each had 2 RBI. Schwarber had 3 hits. OF Weston Wilson pitched 2 clean innings w/ 57 mph heater. Phils really miss Harper.

Phillies lost to the Brewers, 6-2, in a truly anemic performance. Brewers’ opener went 3 innings with only a walk. Second guy finished the game, getting 16 ground outs over 6 innings, giving up the 2 runs. MIL scored 2 in the 1st and never looked back. Harper is still out from HBP 4 games ago.

Bassitt vs. Basset, Head Shake Mechanics.

Phillies lost game 2 to ATL 9-3. Zack Wheeler got off to a good start, but lost it in the RAV 4th inning on two dink hits and two hits that were crushed. 2 walks in 6th also scored. HP umpire was so bad I wonder if he was doing it on purpose. Phils are 36-20, best record in NL, 2 ahead of NY.

Phillies win a nail biter, 5-4 in game 1. ATL loaded bases in 9th, but did not score. Backup C Rafael Marchan had 3 RBI and 2 CS, including one in 9th that saved the game. Cristopher Sanchez was excellent. Matt Strahm was terrible and allowed ATL to tie game in the 8th. Harper did not play (elbow).

The game between the Phillies and Atlanta was rained out. Double header tomorrow: Smith-Shawver v Cristopher Sanchez and Sale vs Zack Wheeler. The rainout gives Bryce Harper a day to recover from elbow damaging HBP by Spencer Strider. Xrays were negative, but pitch was dangerous. Watch out, Acuna …

Phillies beat Atlanta 2-0. Neither starter (Ranger v Strider) had great command, but Ranger kept ATL from scoring, despite a shitload of 3-2 counts. Strider gave up 1 run, on a booming 2B by Kepler, who then made a baserunning blunder. Bullpen (Kerkering, Strahm, Romano) was magnificent. Big win.

Big Tech has done a masterful job of controlling the narrative about its products, denying obvious harms and always managing to do more harm with each iteration. What if, instead of manipulating users for profit, Big Tech tackled some of society’s real problems, eg, climate, health, education?

oh hi

Nick Clegg says that asking creative people for permission to use their work would kill AI. I am glad he cleared that up. It sounds like a terrific outcome. www.theverge.com/news/674366/...

Phillies’ Sunday day game curse continues. They got down 3-0 in the first, but Jesus Luzardo settled down and did not give up another run. Phils tied it in the 5th and took the lead on a Turner HR in the 8th. Matt Strahm pitched the bottom of the 8th. He gave up 2 runs, ending winning streak at 9.

The Phillies won 7-4 in 11 innings. It was a see saw game, tied because of a Max Kepler HR in 9th off Mason Miller. Kerkering got out of bases loaded none out in the 10th. Fly to CF, Marsh made a perfect throw home for a DP. Kerkering gets 3rd out. Phils score 3 in 11th. Max Lazar first MLB save.

Cold and grey Saturday in Southern Ontario... but got books and coffee all lined up...very excited to read @patrickmcgee.bsky.social @moonalice.com @stuartpstevens.bsky.social and @karaswisher.bsky.social Hope all have a good weekend and Happy Memorial day to American friends!

Phillies win over [Oakland] A’s 4-3. Wheeler was brilliant for 6 2/3 with no runs on 3 hits. Turner led off the game with HR. Rojas kept it 1-0 with an amazing catch in the 8th. Phils put up 3 in the 9th off Mason Miller, but Romano gave up a 3R HR, then a single with 2 outs. Banks got the save.

Next week I sit down with @agomezfcc.bsky.social, @repraulruizmd.bsky.social, @laist.com CEO Alejandra Santamaria, @safiyanoble.bsky.social and La Opinión editor emeritus Gabriel Lerner to discuss the administration’s escalating efforts to quash dissent and suppress free speech. Please join us.

So far we've heard "uh oh" every game this series by the Rockies TV broadcast Turner and Harper go back-to-back

Phillies win 2-0, sweeping the Rockies behind Ranger Suarez (3-0), supported by Kerkering, Strahm, and Romano (S. 6). Harper and Kepler drove in the runs as the Phils swept the series and won their 7th straight. Now 32-18, 2 games ahead of Mets. This is easiest part of Phils’ schedule. Good job!

Phillies win again, 9-5 over the Rockies. Everyone contributed, but HRs from Turner, Harper, and JT led the way. Taijuan Walker was less sharp than in recent starts, but good enough for the W. Joe Ross and Tanner Banks were solid in relief. Phils have best record in NL; surprising, and wonderful.

In @wired.com today, the latest excerpt from EMPIRE OF AI recounts the tensions that began bubbling beneath the surface after Sam Altman took over OpenAI. Including when he asked for a countersurveillance audit because he was worried Elon Musk was spying on them. 👀 www.wired.com/story/empire...

Phillies top Rockies 7-4. Jose Luzardo pitched 6 innings with 2 hits, 1 run, 3 BB, 10 K for his 5th win. Max Lazar pitched a clean 8th, but gave up 2 in 9th. Harper & Marsh had 3 hits each. Schwarber hit HR #301. Marsh had a key OF assist. Phils were only 3 for 14 with RISP. 1st NL team to 30 wins

Worth noting: now that OpenAI feels pressure to generate a profit from ChatGPT, the exec they chose comes from online advertising. Surveillance capitalism remains undefeated as a monetization scheme, but also as a tool to undermine everything important in society. www.wsj.com/tech/ai/fidj...

Pub Day *today* for EMPIRE OF AI— Karen Hao’s @karenhao.bsky.social deeply reported, many-years-in-the-making book on Open AI—which Sam Altman hopes no one will read. So let’s all read it. • bookshop.org/p/books/empi... 🎩to @moonalice.com, which is how I learned of it—and to Bluesky, for existing.

For 6 innings, Phillies made 15-31 Rockies look like world beaters. A Brandon Marsh pinch hit in the 7th started a rally that ended in a 9-3 Phils win. Kyle Schwarber hit his 300th HR, which landed in WY. Sosa, Harper, Turner had key hits. LA & Mets lost, so Phils have the best record in NL.

This was so great. Thanks to everyone who dropped by and weighed in and left comments and questions in the chat, and to Karen for this momentous work. I'll be publishing a post with the full chat and ideally a transcript or edited Q+A to the newsletter tomorrow.
