Great stuff: let us know! When sterile, C caespiticia can't be be reliably separated from sterile C coniocraea. Both look similar; both test K-, Pd+ red (fumarprotocetraric acid). That said, C coniocraea normally on lignum, not earth. May also have sorediate squamules (though not always). 1/2

You can rule out C parasitica with K-test: C caespiticia is K- (or K+ brownish) while C parasitica is K+ yellow (thamnolic acid). C parasitica also normally has granular-sorediate squamules, and grows on lignum not earth. You may indeed have C caespiticia: apothecia would prove it for sure! 2/2

1/2 It certainly looks right for C. caespiticia. It's an easy species when fruiting - the fruits are on white stalks: https://www.flickr.com/photos/cladoniophile/33569164098/in/album-72157632399585712/ but the long frilly-edged squamues are fairly distinctive. The most similar species is probably C. parasitica, with small fruits on granular potedia
