Both mechanisms rely on spindle microtubules (dynamic polymers) that interact with a protein complex called the kinetochore formed on centromere DNA. Kinetochore components are widely conserved among eukaryotes, which makes sense because kinetochores are essential for their survival (5/n)

However, in 2014, we reported discovery of unconventional kinetochores in kinetoplastids, which was a big surprise to the kinetochore field. I have been thinking why kinetoplastids have a different chromosome segregation machinery as well as when/how it evolved (6/n)
