We've known how and why they disappeared for almost as long as they've been in games. All we don't know is if they were destroyed or displaced, and where they are if the latter.
I'm with you on kinda preferring to never find out though.
I hope we can play as Kagrenac in ES6 then play as Kagrenac’s ghost and witness the Dwemer disappearance… They could even leave it a mystery, just drop hints then boom the Dwemer are gone and everyone guesses what happened
