The very real way American society has gone soft is an inability to tolerate levels of tension generations past would have laughed at. A country as diverse & (putatively) free as we are will be fractious. If you say things like 'trying Trump will rip us apart' you shouldn't be in charge of anything.

It’s also in large part due to the media bestowing upon Trump a power and an influence it’s never been clear he has actually possessed. Or, at least, certainly would never have possessed without the media helping attribute that power to him.

And even of this small group, most of them will only post anonymous comments and make anonymous threatening phone calls/SWAT calls.

The number of people that will actually do violence is vanishingly small.

Maybe the Washington Post misrepresented this context (though it fits with other observations I’ve seen) but the court hallway Trump doesn’t look like a guy able to sic another 1/6 crowd just because he’s jailed overnight or whatever. It does seem like a small group of people
