Murmurations seem to be a glimpse at what life does when it starts to self-organize into a new organism of higher complexity. Much like a termite mound.
That's how the bat's look when they head out from the evening hunt, from under the Congress Avenue bridge, Austin, Texas (stock photo, sorry, couldn't find mine)
That's some video that! I haven't seen an epic murmuration IRL since the early '90s. An evening walk to the city centre Co-op always left me spellbound.
No. Not Italy. 😁 I was a student at Newcastle University, UK from 1990 to 1993. In my first year, I lived very close to the city centre, and that's where I'd often get to see the most enormous flocks.
It's a sight you can see wherever starlings thrive.
The video just had the remix in it so that's what my software found. Google says the original by Robert Miles came out in 1995. Even has it's own wikipedia page.
Murmurations are so cool. The coolest part is that a murmuration is a form of democracy in the natural world. Each movement is a vote and the birds move based on how the birds around them move. They vote together and then move together. Pretty awesome!
If it wasn't for the fact that they are noisy as hell and they poop everywhere, I'd love to watch them do this. It really is mesmerizing to me. Thanks for sharing.
