Money probably. My guess NFL has a campaign to make its sport less niche in the UK and sees ITV free-to-air as a vehicle to promote the sport to new viewers, to afterwards push them towards paid for channels. The content costs ITV essentially nothing but they get the substantial ad revenues.

Probably not a representative sample, but all US sport is terrifically popular among most of the younger people I know (mainly quiz people). I wonder if younger people growing up with more transatlantic influences online has made these things which feel culturally foreign to our era seem less so.
