Not to be conspiratorial but if Trump is a Russian asset he would have been advised to soften Europe's resistance by threatening one of their territories (say, Greenland) to strengthen Russia's bargaining position over Ukraine. It's weird that idea came from nowhere and disappeared just as fast.
