I worked as a correctional officer for a year when I was younger. Any "guards" or staff saying they don't understand this are either lying or shit at their job. It seems perfectly consistent with convict culture to me.

He's not wrong, inmate solidarity is a real thing. They can and do stick up for and look out for each other. It's a natural result of their circumstances.

Can also confirm. Dad was inside for over two years, but had huge numbers of jokes and stories, which helped pass the time. More valuable than cigarettes.

He was quite well protected in a lot of ways.
