You can’t do a nonbinary gender though. Not sure if this is new.
“Request for non-binary change (neither male nor female): For requests to update the NUMIDENT with a non-binary sex marker, such as an X, explain that we can only accept a sex marker of male or female, using the following script;”

Nonbianary markers were actively being worked on. The system is archaic, and reprogramming is difficult, so it's been a project for a while. Seemed like the direction was to move to remove gender entirely. Slow progress, but moving in the right direction.

Im sure that that isn't the case NOW.

I don't know if it will change but when I was looking at it before inauguration, they basically stated they only kept track of gender markers on social security for the purposes of demographics research

They'll push for gay marriage to be banned at the national level too. They just don't think they can win that fight yet. Remember, it's state's rights, until they can get the power to do it nationally.
