Sei lá qual é a origem, pode ser de selva mesmo. É um nome comum e antigo em Portugal, foi adotado no Brasil porque os libertos e indígenas adotavam nomes e sobrenomes portugueses. Não sei porque virou o mais comum, mas sei que o artigo é cheio de besteirol.

Minha família foi de judeus que adoraram o cristianismo, forçadamente e usaram o da Silva como disfarce e minha bisa dizia que compravam banha e azeite juntos, pq só azeite era mau visto. Essa é minha anedota

Again, no! And the preposition was widely used by Portuguese people: it had no connection to ownership!
