I can’t comment on the NE, but if you live in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, etc the primary state school is a hell of an option.
My perception (common here) is that any incremental benefit from a private school (Ivy, NU, ND etc) is not from the education, but from the personal connections.
