You and me both, kid. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and there were distinct party differences. But I never worried that one guy would get in there and literally destroy everything. You had a sense that there were rules, laws and understandings.

Like, I’m privileged enough financially to not have to worry about food and shelter. But there’s nothing individual privilege can do if environmental and health and safety and employment and civil rights and etc. protections (and the civil servants working day to day to ensure them) are removed.

I had to fight really hard (and mostly failed) against doomscrolling yesterday. Seeing NIH workshops cancelled mid-day, reading the specifics of some of the anti DEI EOs, it feels like the ground is moving beneath my feet and it’s really unsettling.

Saaaame. I am thinking about what if my org (which sometimes receives federal grants) were to axe our DEI initiatives, or stop offering gender-inclusive bathroom facilities and quiet rooms and nursing parent rooms at our conferences. I would make a stink for sure, but how far and to what end?

It’s very middle-aged of me to be like “save me, administrative state!” but that’s not really what I mean. I also firmly believe in and contribute to local orgs and mutual aid and activism. But there was always something solid beneath that, a floor that was maybe too low but that at least existed.

A friend from law school was one of the first people at the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau and I always loved that for them. It was such a wonderful little agency, doing good things for everyone, full of people who just appreciated being able to do valuable real work.

This really hurts.
