New Years Resolution that should be easy to keep:
Go to the nearest branch of your Public Library and get a Library Card.
If you have kids old enough to get a card, take them with and have them get one too.
Make a big deal out of it.
(It is a big deal.)
Have a Librarian show you around.
Just remember, certain libraries will let you get an eCard without having to physically go. I Iived overseas for a number of years, and could not maintain. I signed up online for Boston Public Library since I have physical mobility issues. You just cannot borrow physical books, movies, etc...
True and Thank you!
My Public Library lets you check out physical books, etc at their branches, or you can go to their website and check out e-books, put holds on physical books and other things on hold.
I also access my PL through the Libby app.
Correct. While I was referring specifically to BPL, other libraries do allow physical borrows with eCards. I was running out of characters, so thanks for the clarification.
If You Use Or Can Afford It—Get A Library Card Anyways—This Supports Americans Right To Choose What Books We Read And Higher Learning Resources—GOPs Will Defund Libraries Bc. Educated People Are A Threat To Fascist Dictatorship/Governments! Every Small Fight Against Fascism Is Combined Progress!!
We need a nation wide strike and march day for Medicare for all. If you believe in this, stay home from work if possible and join a nation wide protest to demand Medicare for all and end the strangle hold the for profit insurance companies have on us.
I am genuinely curious how. Does the number of membership show that libraries are being useful and thus justify the government funding? Memeship is free, and I have never been fined, so technically my taxes find libarary (I couldn't be happier about this) but my membership doesn't.
I've always had 1
My kids have.
I used to take them to activities there
Story time, dancing, Legos
Whatever they had and if I had the time, I took them
Not only were they FREE, these activities help kids socialize& interact with kids their age
My youngest have to take a book out at least once per wk
Also one thing many people don’t know is you can sign up for HOOPLA or KANOPY online with your library card and rent movies for Free at home 💜 - ask your library which one they are connected too … here’s one I watched just last week on Hoopla “Everybody Dance” Documentary- enjoy
Libby is a another major one! You can make digital cards within the app and be able to borrow from several library services. I try to get as many Ohio based ones as I can because damn do audiobooks slap for the drives home from work and while I clean lol
I have cards active for 41 libraries across America lol we move often and a library is our happy place. Thank you Libby and other programs allowing me to check out books digitally from many libraries!
Free e-books and audiobooks at your local library delivered straight to your phone or computer. What more could you ask for? (Well maybe Trump‘s demise.).
Still...things you want taken out. Along with the garbage. And doesn't require a library card. . We tried with a voter card. I think we'll need a coup card. card.
Not every library offers online cards, but mine does. It took me literally a few minutes to get my card. If you don’t have time to get out to your library, which I get, see if you can do it online.
I use my local library frequently! If they don't have a book I am looking for, I request it on the app, or in person, and they will have it sent from another branch 🫶🏼📚 Saves me so much money over buying books
I just got mine the other day. I'm very excited to go to the big library. The main one is shut down because they're renovating. I can't wait to see it! The mock-ups look amazing.
California residents can get library cards from any library in the state. Just show up to a branch with proof of residency (like a recent utility bill). Then you can use the Libby app to download text/audio books. Los Angeles Public Library has the 5th largest collection in the USA.
I have one but it’s such a weird thing “renting “ a digital asset when I can download a library full of digital assets in a week and keep it
I love Libraries but digital scarcity is so messed up.
It would be like taking home a physical DVD from the library, who is paid by our tax dollars to exist, then making an exact replica of the DVD and returning it instantly. There are many ways artists could get paid still through this method maybe even a tiny cut for distributors, and a tax cut.
Since the incoming president can not read or write he probably can’t even find the library.
His minions won’t suggest it because they all ignored their civics lessons in school and need to look up how governments work and read about the history of America.
Library cards cost you nothing. It's voting on budget referendums, local taxes, private donations and being involved that keep them funded. Do ALL OF THAT so kids and adults can just have library cards and access to everything for nothing. Rich and poor alike.
I pay over $100 each year for access to the best library within an hour's driving (45 rural miles). It's all worth it and you're right, it's only a piece of all the work to keep 'em going. Crucial!
You may be able to sign up for a library card online. I'm in CA. I found our library system through an online search. In less than five minutes, I was able to borrow books and put several audiobooks on hold.
My dog-shooting idiot governor is attempting to defund our public libraries. She is trying to get rid of all of the best things in life. I vote that we get rid of her.
If you love libraries and have not done so, be sure to check out the book, "That Librarian: The Fight Against Book Banning in America". First person account of one woman's courageous fight standing against hate and attempts to ban books from libraries.
I FINALLY finished reading an overdue library book. “Surely I must have a fine…” I noted to the librarian. “You’re all set, just glad to see people using the library.”
The library has always been my friend. I love reading, it had wonderful programs for my children which built their love of reading. Only ignorance would ban books and close libraries! ignorance is coming to DC 1/20
I have my card from every library I have belonged to, and I keep them all in my wallet. I don't consider myself a citizen of a community until I have both registered to vote AND gotten a library card.
Also don’t forget to attend the free events at your public library. Statistics of program attendance are reported nationally which helps our funding as well. The more people attend, the easier it is to convince legislatures to appropriate money for libraries. Plus did I mention they’re free???
I just picked mine up last week. Started reading 1st book, “The Soul of an Octopus”. Reading it via my phone. Love the format and the ease of use.
I’m really enjoying the story. Wouldn’t ya know, it’s based in my beloved Boston. I miss it so much, I ache.
I want to go home.
And explore what is available to you through your library! Magazines and newspapers, movies, genealogy and other databases, audio books, sometimes you can borrow tools. Guarantee that you'll say, "I didn't even know I could borrow that" at least once.
actually - buy lots of books and hide them in your basement and don't tell anyone that you have them. eventually MAGA will be coming for them. you can have all the guns you want - just no books. 'cep the bible course.
Believe it or not, I renewed mine about 20 minutes ago from Shaker Height Library. I was ready to check out a Blender book, and the card came back expired.
When my kids were little, I would take them to the library every Saturday. Their friends started asking if they could go with us. So...
I would explain the rules and then go to their parents to get permission.
We had quite a parade. It was wonderful!
Among the many benefits of a library card is that you can subscribe (for free) to Kanopy or Hoopla, both excellent streamers with excellent movie collections. No ads!
I have apple tv and one of my favorite hobbies is looking for free streamers. there are all kinds of free fun apps on there; I assume the same is true for any smart tv
We got my 10 year old onto his own card in November; he enjoys going to the library so much now! And it adds a dash of responsibility to remember to return the books on time. Glad to support public libraries!
Unfortunately, the MAGAs in my county have voted to pull our library out of the regional system. This means, after July 2025, Yancey County will likely not have a library at all. (North Carolina)
The Universities will be next,
MAGAs didn’t study their history in school nor do they understand how government works so they prefer to stamp out Education altogether in the hopes everyone will become as stupid as they are.
Good books do find you! I just finished ‘The Invention OF Hugo Cabret.’ It is fabulous. Martin Scorsese’s film ‘Hugo’ was based on the book. Both are magical.
I have a fine I can't pay for at the moment from ours. I got into a wreck a few years ago. The books were in the car that got totaled. They refused to send the books back to me and sent my car over 2 hours away. I owe the library like 150 for the books. :( I would be there every week otherwise.

As a retired teacher-librarian, I understand the importance of early exposure to books.
I also want to teach her to share and re-use for the good of the planet.

I’m going tomorrow.
God save our libraries!
Ooops. 😥
I never understood why everyone didn’t make use of the resources available.
I would explain the rules and then go to their parents to get permission.
We had quite a parade. It was wonderful!
*I believe Kanopy and Hoopla are US only
I use kanopy & hoopla often

Libraries rule??? Might even check out a book eventually
And it's good for any library in the county.
I discovered Mark Salzman’s Lying Awake and Nervous System by Lina Meruane. They were just what I needed. Let good books find you. For free!
