Oh, ok. They're saprotrophic, meaning that the mycelium consumes the dead-wood, so you don't have to worry about damaging them by taking the mushrooms. They're too tough to be edible, but can be used medicinally.
Lovely photo! Trametes versicolor? looks like an oak log that was cut a while ago. Live in rural Michigan and see beautiful fungus like this all around me, some of which is quite edible.
One of the things I love most about nature is the way it repeats itself, if you zoom in this could be a mushroom, an oyster, tree bark or even something gross like an infected toe nail. The patterns repeat like the seasons making up the tapestry of life π
