Genuine question for white people in North America, especially those with a few generations on this stolen land.

What is your culture and can you define it, and has it been passed down from where your ancestors came from?

Ummmmm….coin collecting? Unreasonably large collections in general? Does this count? Or is this just passed down mental illness? Hahahaha My family is very white on both sides & this is the only thing I can think of!

Groups like Italian-American and Irish-American weren’t considered white for a long time, but they wanted to be. They wanted to sit at the popular kids’ table and escape the oppression of being Not white. 2/

And as the population of Black, Asian, Latino Americans grew, so did the definition of “white.” It expanded to include those previously deemed undesirable. It had to, or else white people would lose their perceived majority. 3/

So white people surrendered their culture, their history, to become as homogenized as possible. We stopped being Irish, German, French, and just became “American.”

I don’t feel like I have a culture but I have been told Scottish and German and one of my parents is registered with the Ho-Chunk tribe but I don’t really talk about it or consider myself since I wasn’t like raised in it???

My culture, to the extent I even have one, is science fiction fandom. That's a chosen culture, not something I inherited.

I grew up white, impoverished, and alienated.

The closest thing we had to family traditions was Chinese buffet for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
