Right now, for a lot of Canadians the temptation is to ignore Indigenous people because the threats from the US seem way more important. This turn to fervent and ignorant nationalism is a mistake. Don't alienate the people who know more about your "country" than you do. Find common cause instead.

I think a lot of settlers, like me, are freaking out because most of us have simply never faced occupation. Indigenous folks across Turtle Island continue living through one occupation or another to this day.
Damn straight we need common cause, and true reconciliation has to be part and parcel.

I admit, I have lots to learn and to unlearn. A willingness to understand and grapple with the historic and continuing harms that Canada has done/does to Indigenous communities is step one. Action *yesterday* should be step two.

And the work isn't that hard. 98% of FN leaders are elected. The FN population skews right - it's easy to work there. You just need to come to the table with something, be open to making small modifications to projects and most will go through in a week.

It’s anecdata but grew up in Cariboo. Gustafson Lake territory. My experience was community on the rez were anti- conservative. Apolitical mostly, but those who were leaned red/orange.
My partner is Cree from SK. His people aren’t right leaning either. Very orange. Alberta folks are another matter
