my truck is currently broken down. hopefully i can get it going again & not have to worry about replacing it for a while because even used vehicles are so expensive. but an ebike just to do all my in-town errands would be awesome. I just need the truck to go fishing & camping.

Yeah, I have the hybrid Toyota for fishing and backwoods skiing trips. In my town I can take the bus, walk or bike to the grocery store and all, it's not critical.

Maybe I keep it for some trips, but it's not the easiest way to move around here especially in the hardest winter months.

In the London boroughs where I live and work 60-70% of people have no car. Everyone under 18 can’t drive.It baffles me how driving is presented as a human right, and how being able to have ‘freedom’ to drive is prioritised time & time again over making cities good to get around for the rest of us.

I'm super glad to hear this. A year ago I bought an electric mountain bike and it's revolutionised my life. I can pop down the mountain to the nearest town 16km away, for a bit of shopping, or go for lunch, or for a swim. It's barely slower than taking the car. (7 hour walk there and back!) 🚲💚

On my shopping list. Along with solar panels, a backup battery system, a full EV (we have a hybrid), and a heat pump. I've already switched my full lawn & garden tools to electric/battery. And if I could get my local utility to switch to full green power, that would be a great little start.

Dutch guy here, we just bought our most expensive bike ever at 2700€.
But it makes it possible to work in the next town 8 km away without car. Yes a normal bike is possible, but not in practice at our age.
So ebikes reduce car miles

I visited Chengdu around 2008. Standing alongside a busy road, I suddenly realized that most of the sound was the hum/whoosh of electric 2-wheelers. The road was carrying far more people than an LA freeway, but quietly. A glimpse of a future that could be: actual efficient use of roadways.

My wife and I each have a Tern HSD.. we use it for almost all non-highway trips. For me that is about 97% of all my trips, and about half of total km traveled. My wife has to drive a bit for work, so her's isn't probably quite as good but still probably pretty close.

Ah, you mean nations that have made it reasonably safe to ride a bike. That vast majority of our population lives either in cities without great cycling infrastructure or in suburbs where they must rely on freeways to get to work. I'm not arguing against ebikes AT ALL. Just our infrastructure.

Until I started reading stories about how these can be truly viable alternatives for both environmental and personal cost reasons, I never considered them. With a preschooler it didn't seem useful but I am encouraged to consider it for in town use. I just have to toughen up for winter use!
