One thing that I’ve learned in adulthood is that it really IS good to introduce people by including an interesting fact along with their name, like they say to do in Bridget Jones’ Diary.

I have a friend who does this and it makes her sound like Sue Perkins introducing someone on Bake-Off: "Helga is a knitting instructor from Basildon and enjoys growing mangoes in her home greenhouse."
it's deffo up there. if i fail on interesting, i'll at least mention how i know them, so there's context for the person's presence! the other useful opener is asking how people know the host or how they found out about an event
The best version of this I ever did was to the first two friends to show up to the bar for my birthday, who didn't know each, the conversation was a bit slow, and I had to pee. "You both have cats named Leonard," I announced, and they both looked DELIGHTED, leaned in, and I scampered away
