I've been thinking along these lines for a few weeks. Given FIFA & 2026 is only next year, barring a major cataclysm involving non-violent protesting US citizens being killed, the World Cup will go on as scheduled (w/ lower international attendance). But the 2028 LA Summer Olympics--more iffy.

I don’t know if I would call this a boycott but there is a lot of discussion in the scientific community about not attending conferences in the US because they don’t feel safe to do so. So I would not be surprised if people express concern about coming to the World Cup

The other option is for Mexico and Canada to make a deal with FIFA and hold the games intended for the US there. You could probably still go, but you might have to spend a couple of weeks on the floor of an ICE detention center along the way. It'll be worth it!
