By 2040, 30% of Americans living in rural states will elect 70 senators. The other 70% of Americans will elect 30 senators. Most of the people living in rural states are white and lack a college degree. Give that some thought.

Senate as constituted is absolutely untenable. 50 densest sized equal population districts possible with 3 Senators per district, one up for election every 2 years. That or just yeet into sun.
Power of the purse, blue states should cut the tax faucet to the fed off. "No taxation without representation"
Trump has shown the constitution is a piece of paper that he just uses as Kleenex, blue states should follow
Funny thing here rural Iowa college town. They bitch about jobs, the college reduced size, Walmart killed off good quality local shops and then town of 10k went downhill. Now you drive 35-55 miles to shop.
But. We now have more banks, more churches 🥺🥺
College degree isn't necessary. Being able to read, to think, to learn throughout life are what's needed. But that's not what white American culture promotes, especially in those rural areas.
It turns out presidential democracies all share the same weaknesses and also you're voting system is totally out of date. Created for times when people used men on horseback for exchange of information. There's a reform worth doing...
Can't those with remote jobs and retired move around until we get the situation fixed? Snowbirds. If ppl live in Tx, ppl can make trips to Mexico to get meds, like b4.
Sure thing - get supermajorities in both houses of Congress, a president willing to sign a constitutional amendment, and 3/4 of the states to ratify it.
Thanks for posting this. Non-representative government has angered me for years. California, with a population of 39 million, is represented by 2 senators, while Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska have a combined population of around 7.36 million and 12 senators.
I really feel for you and your situation in Idaho. Crapo and Risch seem to be on the cutting edge of The Handmaid's Tale love-fest. I saw that Crapo told RFK Jr. he's confident that freak will be confirmed. Hard to remember the distant past when Idaho actually had the sanity of Frank Church.
I remember him well from those days. He was a stellar individual and was so good for Idaho and the country. Things have gotten really bad, and so sorry you have to deal with this. I have some college friends from here (Colorado) who live in Pocatello, Twin Falls, and Boise and they're horrified.
In 15 years there could be a total change in the landscape, that’s if we don’t destroy ourselves. One scenario, 1788 could repeat itself, which as a reminder, didn’t turn out so well for oligarchs & other associated despots…
Fear of government and liberals is a red area weapon. Democrats need to start asking why the GOP never blames private companies? Energy rates are rising, the GOP blames democrats and government. Housing rates increase, the GOP blames democrats and government. Attack that angle
The 2 Senators per state is one of the few things in the
Constitution that cannot be
amended.
The House,on the other hand has 435 members since the late 20's.There are now 3 times as many people. That number could and should be raised.Naturally the wingers will oppose it
It needs to change or the USA will fall apart. No way that the majority will be bending Iver backwards to a tiny minority of the red states indefinitely. You will get a breaking point.
Dems have been reaching out for years. Only thing that’s gonna budge the willfully ignorant is massive suffering from their choices, or opening their eyes to education and employment that will lift them out of poverty.
Actually, they haven't been reaching out. They'd rather go for the biggest number of votes - in the cities where people already benefit from social welfare.
Rural America needs a lot of help and with fewer voters, it isn't economical for the opportunistically philanthropic democrats to pander.
I think they’ve ceded the low populous areas for the higher populated areas. It’s costing the party entire half empty states that still get 2 senators each.
As Trump claimed right to his MAGA diaper wearing, maxi-pad wearing, Trump merch buying faces, he loves the poorly educated. Of course he does they operate at the same elementary school grade level as he does.

Don’t you love the totally unrealistic solutions people propose? Great ideas if only the amendment process weren’t the equivalent of running a 3 minute mile. If the ERA couldn’t pass, almost nothing will.
It is easier to get the popular vote award of electoral college votes approved which would help. Sorting out the senate will be an impossible task, unless their is a military coup.
This isn’t going to work. Expanding Congress by the cube root proposal would more properly represent population. As it is right now, a vote in Wyoming weighs more than a vote in California per capita.
Hey Sundae, I'm aligned with your goals but the implication of you post is that rural people are stupid. I don't agree. They're smart but largely disenfranchised and it's about time that decent people stood up for them in the face of the right wing authoritarian oligarchy that aims to destroy them
They lack advanced education, don't practice critical reasoning, don't seek for diverse info sources, are gullible, and easily tricked by scoundrels inventing conspiracy theories into mass murder and genocide.
They will become loyal Nazi supporters, right?

It's not just the Senate. From what I understand, I'm from the UK not the US, the whole electoral college system favours red states? That's the impression I got from watching the coverage of the election.
This is because in the Constitutional Convention the framers had to compromise to get it passed. One of the major comprises was the apportionment of the Senate being two Senators for every state. That appeased the smaller states that didn't match the population of the larger states.
I agree. There was a time that not so long ago (under Obama) where some blue states that had moderate Republicans. My home state which is now red has two Democrats as Senators & a Dem U.S. Rep.
Are you talking about Michigan? I was so happy when we were blue all the way. Big Gretch has 2 years, and then what? I’m terrified of a maga republican governor getting control.
trump/musk will seek to split us to exert total control. I think we have to come to common ground with the reasonable people who voted republican. I think we need to acknowledge the concerns of the people in the red stated and figure out how to get them back into the tent. We know trump hates them

While Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, and Utah have 38 million people combined and they have 10 Senators
IQ tests for voters. They must score higher than a squirrel.

Until GOP leadership says enough is enough, this is going to continue. We have to call these men and demand that they take action.

This was in a NYT article several years ago.

Not all red states have bad people.
I left ND behind for good in 2010.
The point is - when these states have the Senators one side wants the other side demonizes an entire state & causes MORE division.
