I went to university and at one time worked for a chap with a PhD, college people (perhaps trade school?, ...with diplomas) used to just shake their heads in his presence. He hadn't the slightest clue about real things. Smart as a whip, but almost useless.
I had a PhD in Physics once tell me: most times a PhD thesis is the equivalent of detailed notes on a small rock atop Mt.Everest. Nothing wrong with it, but it is HYPER specialized.
YES true!
To be candid I worked for two physics PhDs, one was playful, brilliant, and modest the other was sombre, a lot smarter than me, and aloof.
I will bet that these two chaps produced very different theses
It so odd, isn't it. Some people can be both academic and (dare I say it) normal while others are almost totally engulfed by it. There needs to be a doctoral thesis on this complete with FMRI images.
It's been a long time since I remember liking people. At least here everyone is mostly kind and decent and so that's great. Mutual respect, sharing of ideas, and all that. I wouldn't call it like, but it's a start.
This is a shit take, filled with elitism, classism, and hypocrisy. Not everyone with a college degree is a decent person, or even smart for that matter; e.g. Ben Carson. You know who else has a college degree? Mitch McConnell, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, JD Vance, even Marjorie Taylor Greene 🤢
Thinking like this is why Liberals keep REAL PROGRESS from happening!
I DON'T have a college degree because I've had to work multiple jobs since highschool to take care of myself while grappling with severe mental anguish from repeated traumas... But yeah, fuck me, right?!
I would say with a soul. Plenty of college graduates who lack critical thinking skills and more importantly empathy. Plenty of people who didn’t go to college who are well educated and can have an intelligent exchange of ideas.
Could it be like striking up a conversation with a well-read blue collar guy or farmer poet at the diner counter while eating a piece of peach pie with coffee?
And those without college degrees but a solid K-12 education that supported critical thinking skills. I know many & we shouldn't alienate them just because they don't have the degree.
My only real concern (and believe me I’m not complaining about it), is that blue sky is a bit of an echo chamber for thinking people. How do we go about convincing the illogical of their doomed folly?
Maybe by stop thinking of others as "illogical" and try to find understanding in what their actual fears are. THE WAY Y'ALL TALK ABOUT PEOPLE WITH DIFFERING OPINIONS IS CAUSING WIDER DIVISION, CUT IT OUT!
That is an EXCELLENT question, and exactly where we should start when trying to bridge understanding with someone else. We must help each other understand each other, find common ground SOMEWHERE. I'm not here to answer for other people though, just making sure there's room for all voices.
Daryl Davis 'Klan We Talk's I would say is an extreme example of this, and Andrew Callahan's documentary 'Dear Kelly' I think is a worthy pursuit; that story hasn't ended yet.
