Trayvon Martin was murdered in Sanford on land that had been home of Mayaca people, later the Seminoles.

Town incorporated during Reconstruction.

Named for Henry Sanford who lobbied for U.S. recognition of King Leopold II’s colonial claim to the Congo. 💔⬇️
