June 7th! Join me at Teach Truth Pop-Up at Laguna Beach Farmers Market publicschoolstrong.controlshift.app/events/teach...

Comrade card for 5/27/2025. (These words by @mskellymhayes.bsky.social were on repeat in my head as I poured out my despair about AI in school to @jessehagopian.bsky.social on the phone yesterday.)

"By destroying knowledge, including the very scholarship that would study the effects of the admin’s policies on society, the Trump administration & its allies can ensure that their looting of the federal gov't & public goods can never be fully rectified or punished." -- @adamserwer.bsky.social ⬇️

"I was attacked with fists, brass knuckles & the broken portions of glass sugar containers, & was burned with cigarettes. FBI agents were observing inside but took no action." — Tougaloo prof. at Woolworth’s sit-in, Jackson, Miss. #terrorism #tdih 1963 More⬇️🧵 www.zinnedproject.org/news/tdih/ja...

In eastern Oregon, in an area now known as Chinese Massacre Cove, white men murdered 34 Chinese laborers 💔 in a brutal act of white supremacist violence in Hells Canyon Massacre. No one found guilty, despite a confession. Read "Massacred for Gold: The Chinese in Hells Canyon" by R. Gregory Nokes.

I love the Zinn Education Project's #TDIH posts. What is wrong with us, Bluesky? How does @zinnedproject.bsky.social not yet have 10K followers over here?!

#tdih 1956 Tallahassee Bus Boycott begins. Police arrested @famu1887.bsky.social students Wilhelmina Jakes and Carrie Patterson for “placing themselves in a position to incite a riot” for sitting in "white" section of bus. As in Montgomery, Black community organized carpools. See ⬇️ 🧵

On CRM, textbooks focus on segregation & ignore widespread police brutality & complicity with white supremacy. www.zinnedproject.org/materials/po... Children should be invited to question images in books: Why are they arresting people defending voting & labor rights? If not, it is normalized.

If you have any relationship to TX-- you're from there, you have family there, you know people there-- now's the time to get on the ringer and rally against this truly disastrous bill. It's a death wish for school libraries statewide.

#tdih 2020: brutal murder of George Floyd by police. 💔 Next week marks 5 years since the Black-led uprising for Black lives. Millions of people from all backgrounds poured into the streets. That unprecedented solidarity shook political establishment to its core. Backlash was swift & continues. ⬇️

For folks who don’t know, ethnic studies programs like African American/Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies and the like come directly from civil right era campus activism. Attempts to disempower such programs should be framed as attacks on civil rights same as much else rn.

"Traitors shall not dictate or prescribe to us the terms or conditions of our citizenship, so help us God." #tdih 1865, election day in Norfolk, African Americans tested their right to vote and when denied, cast their own "freedom ballots." Read ⬇️ 🧵 www.zinnedproject.org/news/tdih/bl...

We devote musicals, miniseries, and documentaries to the founders of our first republic and not to those of our second, who saw this country with clear eyes. We need fewer encomiums for Jefferson, Madison, and Lafayette. More respect for Sumner, Stevens, Bingham and Douglass (Frederick).

#tdih 2022 While almost 400 law enforcement officers stood by, 19 children & two teachers were massacred in Uvalde in 90% Latinx school. 💔 10 days after Buffalo massacre. 💔 This is police brutality: they refused to intervene themselves & blocked parents. 🧵 www.zinnedproject.org/news/tdih/uv...

“We’ve southernized Dr. King. And so, his critique of police brutality outside the South, his long-standing critique of school segregation, of housing segregation, of job discrimination, King sees these as national, not local,” -- @jeannetheoharis.bsky.social via @democracynow.org Listen ⬇️

Friday report: This week 136 teachers signed up at ZEP for people’s history lessons from Concord, Goleta, & San Rafael, CA; Naugatuck, CT; Chicago, IL; Boston & Holyoke, MA; Las Vegas, NV; Franklin, NC; Defiance, OH; Buda, TX; Seattle, WA; & many more cities. #TeachTruth Some reasons why ⬇️

📅 June 7 is the @zinnedproject.bsky.social‬ #TeachTruth Day of Action and it’s not too late to get involved. Every event counts when we come together to protect students’ right to learn without limits. Find resources, local events, or start your own here:

I am such a fan of teaching w/ & about timelines—such great opportunities to help students understand how historians construct the past: When do we start the clock? What events & individuals get featured? What alternative timelines are possible to the ones which the powerful insist are inevitable?

"The people get tired of dying," says one of Henry Dumas' short story characters. #tdih 1968 Henry Dumas (b. 1934), acclaimed author, was fatally shot by NY Transit police. 💔 Dumas's family had moved to Harlem in Great Migration. He was active in Civil Rights Movement. Read more ⬇️#TeachTruth

"Understanding that the intention was to scare us, confuse us, and cause us to self-censor, my position [is a] commitment not to be scared. . . and not to self-censor. To avoid anticipatory compliance." -- Dilys Schoorman, Florida teacher educator interviewed by @csleeter.bsky.social #TeachTruth

Also Adrienne Rich.

Two horrible things happened in DC in the dead of night but if this big ugly bill passed by the House becomes law, I'm afraid it's going to kill a lot more than two people

#tdih 1963 In rare exception to white supremacist only voice allowed on Mississippi TV (& most radio), NAACP field sec. Medgar Evers gave 17-min. speech on a Jackson station on voting & labor rights. Evers was murdered 3 weeks later. 💔 #TeachTruth Read ⬇️ www.zinnedproject.org/news/tdih/me...

Jason Stanley's Erasing History is a compelling source in educators' efforts against ignorant & racist re-writing of history. @zinnedproject.bsky.social released an interview w/him, also providing a helpful list of resources for educators navigating all of this: www.zinnedproject.org/news/erasing...

#tdih 1975, protest of police beating of Chinese American Peter Yew, who'd intervened to stop NYC police beating a teen. Demands for end to discrimination in housing, education, employment, health, more. Chinatown businesses: “Closed to Protest Police Brutality.” #StopAAPIHate #AAPIHeritageMonth
