I’m not an expert in defence and that is what the AI has been tasked with addressing here in the defence review.

I do however , absolutely , know about energy sector procurement and supply chains and for a considerable amount of time and variety of senior roles.

However what it doesn’t do is provide the answer to the question “what’s in it for me, my department, my ‘in’ group”.

This one area in particular remains a blind spot .

It is Politics:
Governmental, inter force, interdepartmental, interpersonal.

That bit has been and will be the blocking factor in counteracting the inertia of the status quo, is the graveyard of attempts in overhauling any system, especially in hidebound institutions like the MOD ( or indeed the oil and gas industry).

So AI will continue to be just another voice shouting in to the wilderness until we can pair it with smart political operators with a vested interest with the ability and will to push through.

I have always been focused on compression of supply and supply chain cycles, including development of an original scope.

So looking at a lot
of this stuff there are many areas where the AI s conclusions and recommendations and my experience are aligned.

Its emphasis on aggressively cutting legacy projects and redirecting efforts towards technological innovation and referencing current trends compressing development schedules, failing fast and learning lessons and embracing non defence but adjacent technologies it is spot on.

I was unfamiliar with the defence review documents. Coming from a background in consulting, these documents strike me as the worst my profession produces: all bark, not bite. It’s all aspirational talk: “we want x, we should do y”. Sure, but how? I’m reading products of the pie in the sky factory.

And obviously AI is very good at replicating this! It’s outputs all “sound true” and can describe a useful decision making workshop methodology. But it reminds me a lot of Mariana Mazzucatto’s critique of consulting, which is that it is often theatre rather than content.

I’m impressed with the pace that LLM’s are developing agentic frameworks. I wonder how long until the OpenAI plus version is able to access deep research. Hugging face just released a 24h+ reproduction sprint demo , but it appears to be down.
