I remember hearing about what used to be called 'sex changes' as a kid. I just thought it was a normal things that people did if they felt they needed to be that way.
There is also an organ composer (I forgot her name), who transitioned in the 60's/70's. She was born in 1939 and she knew she born in the wrong body since she was 5. So that is in 1944.
It'd be so funny if this was her "you have to post in a newspaper for a name change"
That should (be able to) be a thing today, to take out a full page just broadcast it proudly
I prefer the term "genital reconstruction surgery" for bottom surgery vs the usual "gender reassignment" or "sex reassignment". It's aligned with the cisgender description if their genitalia get maimed or malformed at birth, etc.
the composer for the original trilogy of star wars, was also trans if my memory serves correct and that was in the 70s. she was nominated for an academy award too, i believe the first openly trans woman to be nominated for one.

(not John Williams the composer of all 3 Star Wars trilogies + many many things)
There isn't the score without her to be sure and you are correct she was the first openly trans person to be nominated for an Oscar.
