Remember, Dem politicians had to be dragged into *gay rights.*. Oddly, you could argue the *legal* argument for gay marriage was ahead of the Democrats view of the *politics*. People forget both Clinton and Obama were publicly anti-gay marriage. And some conservatives argued for the legal element.
