Ooh that's nice! Notice that the ring is the atmosphere of Earth lit up by sunshine, not the Sun's corona as when the Moon covers the Sun in an earthly eclipse. The disk of the Earth seen from the Moon is much bigger than that of the Sun.

Isn't the corona itself somewhat similar to the sun's atmosphere, also lit up by sunshine (plus, like an expensive cigar, corona glow) that becomes visible in a total eclipse:

I think so, but the point was that when the Moon comes between Sun and Earth, then you see the entire corona during totality. Not so the other way around because Earth is too big.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Without even the shield of Earth's atmosphere, it is probably impossible (or stupid) to actually look in the sun's direction during an earth eclipse, from anywhere.

So only robotic photos can give such fabulous sights, from objects at lunar orbit range. And an observatory orbiting a little farther away will give us the full corona, we don't actually need a lunar mission device.

Since the Earth is 3.67 times wider than the Moon (and therefore also 3.67 times wider than the Sun appears at this distance), I think this means the ring shape in the photo is caused by refraction through the Earth’s atmosphere, and not the edges of the eclipsed Sun visible directly.

Of course it is. The sun always looks like that when a flat disk is put in front of it.

This theory was last tested by an orange fluff in a white house.
