Anyone else notice how the impetus to generate data has shifted from wanting to understand things to wanting AI to understand things for us?

We're excited to announce Arc Institute's search for a Chief Scientific Officer to help advance our mission of accelerating scientific progress on complex human diseases. Are you energized by ambitious, collaborative research that no single lab could tackle alone? Visit www.gem.com/lp/arcinstit...

"We can imagine a day when awards for women will no longer be necessary; that day will come when women are represented fairly among prizewinners. For now, we must continue to offer opportunities for outstanding female researchers to get the credit they deserve." www.nature.com/articles/d41...

With the spatial announcement out I keep hearing people refer to Slide-Seq in 2021 as the first time this was done on Illumina flow-cells, but some of us have been around long enough to remember this little number from 2014 pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Today we report a new compendium of human gut microbiomes with >168,000 samples By analyzing this massive dataset, we discovered distinct microbiome patterns across the globe, and show we can predict where a person lives just from their gut bacteria Now out in Cell: www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

This is basically right in my view. A 6% annual growth rate in published articles has been slow-brewing crisis in science. It's created an ocean of publications where too many dubious claims can find support in peer-reviewed research. This is unsustainable. www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

Introducing "Metagenomic Estimation of Dietary Intake", or "MEDI": a data-driven approach to estimating dietary and nutritional intake from stool DNA 💩 - 🍌🥦🐟🥩📈 See @cdiener.com's excellent thread below. We are really proud of this work, and we hope it is useful to the scientific community.

Hey Friends, Does anyone have access to or know of an electron-microscopy-as-a-service provider? I need some SEM images of some homebrewed carbon quantum dots (size, standard deviation of diameter). Inert and safe, just need size distribution. TYIA!

Wastewater from airplane toilets? We introduce a global Aircraft-Based Wastewater Surveillance Network (WWSN) for pandemic monitoring in Nature Medicine 🔗 doi.org/10.1038/s415... Aircraft-based wastewater surveillance allows for real-time, non-invasive monitoring of global pathogen spread Short 🧵

BBC tested a bunch of chatbots used as news source: - 51% have issues with answers - 19% fabricate fake statistics / info - 13% fabricate fake quotes or alter them This is exactly what you expect from a random word blender being used as a source of information. www.bbc.co.uk/aboutthebbc/...

Do you use AI to draft personal communications? I can't shake my conviction that diction, tone, style, and even errors are all part of authentic engagement. They are also a mental muscle that needs regular workouts, and something that atrophies with under-use. Don't do it!

RIP David Lynch. He really knew how to get under your skin and keep you guessing, never felt the need to do clunky exposition or foreshadowing, and was always happy to leave you in a state of confusion and ambiguity, wondering if it all made sense and maybe you just didn't get it. Legend.
