yup, that's what we've done in the past. did you read the study? it's actually hard to just ask -- most people can't remember exactly what they ate yesterday or the day before. many people lie about it to appear healthier than they are. and it's a lot of work to fill out these questionnaires.

Hey Sean, does MEDI currently distinguish between fermented foods like tempeh vs. non-fermented like tofu? I would think there can be considerable differences in metabolite profiles between fermented and non-fermented foods that could be relevant.

we're only detecting DNA (not metabolites), so I doubt we'd be able to distinguish...but if there was a DNA signature (e.g., microbes associated with the fermentation process that were detectable) then it's possible! we'd need the right validation data.

Yes! Combinations like soy + rhizopus oligosporus to differentiate tempeh vs other soy products and so on would be a really cool extension.
