Hunting for food in rural areas is as much tradition as it is for actual feeding of your family. I do not support hunting for trophies for your wall, but if you're rural and poor, it should be okay to fill your freezer to make it through the winter.

Maybe this is more to do with your sample set. I have a family that has many hunters and fishermen and they ALL do it for the same reason, they enjoy it. It’s not my place to judge them, but it’s important to maintain a realistic worldview for why anyone does what they do.

No, what you call 'Hunting' we call 'Shooting.' In a UK context 'Hunting' very specifically refers to hunting with hounds, primarily of foxes, and it is never done in the pursuit of food.

I’m with you on this, even though I’m not a hunter because I don’t have the stomach for killing a critter. Hunting is very useful for culling overpopulation of some species and preventing diseases. I much rather see you putting food on you family’s table by taking an animal that’s lived free.

Hi BD200. This is about fox hunting in the UK: there are no herds or conservation intentions. They use dirty tricks and aggression to by-pass the law. No-one eats foxes. Sometimes the hounds run amok and get into gardens and tear apart people’s pets. It is nothing like your USA hunting tradition.

I'm an American. I've hunted my whole life. Mostly for food during lean times. But at no time is a fox considered food. So what is the point to hunting them. Are they in the chicken coop killing chickens and eating the eggs? Then you might capture them.

I'm in rural france and "La chasse" is pretty well regulated and organized in my area, with an emphasis on wild boar. I don't eat meat and dont agree with hunting animals for sport, but if I see fewer Sanglier when I am out running alone, I'm good. I share the roads with the deer, foxes and rabbits.

As a keeper of pet poultry I don’t want to see them predated on by foxes etc and will protect them when necessary, however I don’t enjoy the feeling unlike the hunting fraternity who do, the way they dispose of their hounds when they are no longer able to fulfil their use also speaks volumes.

I grew up in the countryside and knew quite a few farmers, most could take care of any issues themselves and did not have anything to do with the hunts. It's a sport to them and a very outdated and not needed tradition.

Hunting is a necessity in some communities and a cultural ritual in others. In farming and ranching communities there is also the occasional need to stop various despoilers. Good hunters have concern for their prey while bad hunters enjoy the carnage. It’s complicated.

So true! As a rural person with livestock it’s my responsibility to secure coops and enclosures. If foxes are removed rats will eat chickens and their feed. There are lots of other predators foxes keep in check!
