Your native red squirrels got displaced by eastern gray squirrels from the eastern US & in California our native gray squirrels got displaced by (redish) eastern fox squirrels from there.
The species are similar, but the fox squirrels are bigger. They're bigger than the rabbits where I live.

*yep they’ll be grey squirrels but they’ve foraged from enough crisp packets.

More accurately, someone might've shot AT the squirrels & hit a few bystanders.
