Hi Tasha! I noticed this in the show when Zip said Lara need a dance lesson, which Sam also asked Lara to dance when they first met and Sam always want to teach Lara how to dance.
Is this a call back? Or they gonna dance together in season 2? I hope so because this can't be a coincidence π
Hello Tasha! im Dandelion, i wanna ask you something, what should we expect as a fan of Lara and Sam in season 2?
their dynamics in the 2013 game and the comic is my fav and also lot of fans favorite. they are like moon and sun, they contrast each other but they complete each other. It's "Balance"
On my initial pitch of the overall show, Netflix and CD had to approve. Once we got into the nitty gritty of the show, Netflix and CD were great at letting us cook. CD would make sure nothing was off-canon or blatantly incorrect, like outfit details, but for the most part, all the creative freedom!
Was it a concious decision to make Lara less lethal over human life in the show ? Is it her reaction after witnessing the events of Shadow of the Tomb Raider ? Do you think it's now a part of Lara's grow as a character (to kill less peoples) ?
I joke that Lara is a serial killer. She shoots first, asks questions later in most games. I'd love to make a violent R / hard PG13 Lara, but in an effort to bring in new young & old fans, S1 didn't start her in a place of murder. That being said, S2 will show a much more lethal Lara :)
I've always been curious about the Azores. I wanted an island that not a lot of people (at least where I'm from) know much about that would be a shock to see snowy weather and could also believably have an abandoned marine facility. (The President is totally fictional! No names deliberately haha)
You mentioned in your podcast that the 1st episode had to be heavily rewritten up until the auction scene. How did those rewrites impact the other episodes?
Luckily, the pilot rewrites didn't impact the other episodes much at all. It was more about how are we investing in Lara emotionally from the start? How well are fans following vs. new people who know nothing about Lara?
Congratulations of the Game Awards nomination, btw! It was a really strong year for videogame adaptations, and I am so happy to see Tomb Raider amongst the nominees!
Listen. Personally, I LOVE the bow. I know everyone loves the pistols, but I will love the bow & pickaxe into eternity. Game mechanics wise, they were just way more fun and more uniquely badass. But hard to buy a bow being better than pistols in 9/10 situations. But keep an eye out for the 1/10!
Oh I like that. I feel like the red pickaxe is pretty iconic for Lara at this point so I don't want it to go away. But I've missed the pistols. And the bow can be used for stealthy occasions. I'd love to see them all again tbh.
The bow should definitely stay, I've always loved them in other games and here was no exception, but it should have never replaced her iconic pistols as the main weapon. If it's in the next game it should be one of many tools at her disposal.
I think your team looked up some references. In my opinion, there are at least ε±±ζ΅·η»/Shan Hai Jing and ε°η₯ζΌδΉ/Investiture of the Gods.
How long did you spend reading the material? What creative changes did you make?
I did a few months of reading and research, including books I got from my family trips to Hong Kong throughout my youth. I made a lot of new connections for the sake of the show, but the core mythology and stories are from real legends/history.
For example, the story of Daji is, historically, a story about an evil woman who corrupted the Emperor. But history is often exaggerated and victors paint people they don't like as extreme villains (as Daji was). The show asks, What if that was all a smear campaign?
thanks u Tasha for openly AMA. i have a question that's will her next adventure will be another apocalypse cleanse by gods? Or gods can walk among with Lara π₯° to stop evil godβs plan ? I have so many questions ahahaha.
How close is Lara to becoming the girl we knew in the first game? Will Lara ever learn to like dresses and heels like in the Classics and LAU? Who is TR1 Lara to you and how will this influence the Anime Lara Croft's journey to becoming that person? Has Lara officially left behind her trauma?
Yes! She will learn to love dresses and maybe even tolerate heels. Her iconic black dress to infiltrate a party is somewhere in her future. But I'm more curious how 2013 Lara learns to become that woman. B/c they are not the same person. I'm interested in the how.
In the 2014 comic, Lara was fine with dresses as long its not really tight. but she isnt a fan of high heels. She even only willing to tolerate heels when shes forced like when it's a dress code in one of the event in the comic. I feel like this giving so much character depth and i hope yall keep it
I don't think it would ever be truly possible for Survivor Lara to fully become Classic Lara. It would be like having it where Christian Bale's Batman became Michael Keaton's Batman. The same character but two very different version.
Frist off, let's work on a rumor. Does season 2 lead into Tomb Raider 1 or is it just something else that occurs in the gap between shadow and the events of 1 and the encounter with the boys in the Rome scene of TR5?
Can't speak to specifics in S2, though I will say generally it's always tough to reference specific things from the games because unless you're a gamer who's specifically played THAT game, then it will take a lot of either exposition or flashbacks, both of which slow down the story right now.
I'll second the person who expressed interest in seeing scripts or at least summaries of cut material. Hell, I'd buy a book of extended scripts if you ever had the opportunity/interest to publish such a thing.
π
How old is Lara now? Does she lift weights? How much can she bench press? What's her favorite tv show? Will she eat jaffa cakes in season 2? (sorry I got excited and panic spammed haha)
Are you planning others seasons, and if not, have you thought about a satisfactory conclusion for the series, both for you in terms of writing and for the fans, to avoid another cliffhanger ?
Lara is a globetrotter. The fun of the games is going to different locales around the world, so I don't see that aspect of the show disappearing. Are you asking for more drama, less action?
There was no additional scene planned for Zip. The fans can put together where he might've gotten those guns, but it didn't feel necessary to show that process, both for time, and because it would be lost on new fans.

One final question, as I'm Portuguese: was there any specific reason why you chose the climax of the Deveraux plot being set in the Azores Islands?
(I love when things I like mention or feature my country :p)
As a side note, some conspiracy theorists also believe the Azores were part of Atlantis, so that is also a fun Tomb Raider connection :)
No flesh mutants there though, just tea and cows :p
Would you consider doing an AMA on Tomb Raider's subreddit?
With season 2 being about stolen African masks, was the African mask at the Croft Manor auction an hint towards it?
Does season 2 villain make a cameo on the same episode?

Thanks for chatting with us all!

In season 1, when Zip gives Lara the pistols, was there originally another scene leading up to this moment ?
Did Zip have find Roth's pistols in the manor ?
What kind of dynamic do you want for season 2 ?
I'll say this: I see each season as a step Lara takes to becoming fully unified. She still has some things to learn.
