I've been running it as a daily driver since 2020 and all of my games work on there. I'd suggest experimenting with it on an old PC first before you consider making the jump.
If you need to run Windows for a specific program, try running W11 in VirtualBox. It's a faff, but it's fast.
That depends solely on the distribution. Arch without tech. knowledge and you're lost. For Mint you don't need more technical knowledge than on Windows. Everything is GUIzed. The .bash_history of my OH is still empty after 7 months of daily usage of the laptop
More seriously, as long as you don't try to run it on latest laptop hardware on an old ass Ubuntu, it's alright. No OS is perfect, just give it an honest spin.
The "your software" approach is prone to fail.
Quite a few people told me they need Excel which are now absolutely OK using LO Calc instead.
Question should be about the tasks not the tools.
If one needs the 100% forwards and backwards compatibility (something even MS messed up during the switches through the different iterations of their xml-zip based file formats).
Look into it, I started using Ubuntu as my desktop about two years ago and hated it. Too much hassle to play some games. However, buying a 15$ POS laptop and putting the same software on it for college, that’s where it stands out.
But I actually prefer having a (good) command line for doing work stuff. And while OS X is OK, it puts stuff all over the file system in weird places so that none of the online documentation matches
It's much more comfortable doing a lot of work in actual linux
Well it really depends on what you are doing. If you are heavily relying on proprietary software such as drivers for your daily use (video, image editing) I would not recommend linux. As a development machine on the other side there is nothing that comes close to linux IMO
As far as I have heard, gaming on Linux is really good now and sometimes even better compared with Windows. The Steam Deck is a big hit and a lot of titles run on it. Not all tho, especially Fortnite. I’m a daily driver and SUSE Linux developer, but game on Switch, so just things I have picked up

no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven

but if you want to get your hands dirty in a technical os, go ahead and try it :D
Things changed massively.
yea actually you make a good point about linux mint, it's mostly, if not already, similar to windows in terms of that usage

linux is really good for simple personal systems imo
I have (had) a laptop I put Linux on and used for work. It was good. Now my daughter uses it as a clock 🫤

IMO there is no one "year of the linux desktop" that applies to everyone. Everyone's year is different
