She's making the mistake a lot of opposition leaders make during the early days of long spells in the wilderness. Doubling down on the core vote, rather than broadening appeal.

So, I don't think this is per se a mistake for opposition leaders there is a need to reassure their core after a tough loss, and rebuilding requires that energy. I think Badenoch's particular problem is that she's not after her core vote, she's after Reform's

It's a far more splintered core vote from the looks of it than in 2001. Only so many she can entice back to the Tories at this point.

I think that's true, but also what I keep going back to is that I am a 30-something "upwardly mobile" middle-class man, working in professional services, homeowner with mortgage, marginal seat, in other words, classic Tory core vote/soon to be core vote, and they're not even trying.

Tbf she can probably make a persuasive case similar to Lib Dems post-2015 election — "look at what they've done without us"
