I feel like it's one of those things teachers can put in to show "engagement" where the pupils look busy but nothing is actually happening.

If you are getting pupils to talk about an idea or a concept, just tell them, it's faster.

It’s not just ‘turn and talk’ that’s needed. Children need support to know how to structure that talk to make is purposeful. Having some sentence stems to promote both structured talk and active listening is crucial for moving thinking, and therefore learning forward. Dialogic teaching does this.

When there's a T&T in play, I almost always see at least one of:

Minimum 25% of the class just not doing it
Finishing well early
Doing it for something where everyone knows the answer
Doing it for something where nobody knows the answer
Melding into just chatting really quickly

Leaders ask for it, and expect it, but nobody can ever tell me the exact parameters of when they use it and why. Is it for checking understanding? Is it for developing thinking? Is it for generic oracy? Is it for students to practise consolidating new vocabulary?

This isn't to say it can't be done well. Our maths dept uses it excellently, but as a part of a sophisticated and coherent approach to group work and peer to peer accountability. They've spent hours thinking about and codifying their approach.

So in sum, if you're going to do it:

Figure out WHY you want to do it, and WHEN that WHY becomes relevant.

Then figure out HOW you are going to routinise it such that it isn't just a bit lame.
