Today, just up the road from me, a 34 year old man who came here from Guatemala…to work on a Hog Farm, succumbed to methane gas while pumping manure out of a holding area.

So very sad. RIP. Prayers for his family and all who loved him. 🙏🙏🙏💔 We need to improve working conditions for people who are willing to do these types of jobs...NOW
Manure gas is actually far worse than methane.
It contains hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, carbon dioxide and methane.
It can kill faster than methane alone.
Every year farm organizations and governments around the world conduct safety blitzes to remind farmers of the dangers.

We treat these migrant workers like disposable garbage. I see it here in FL in the sugar fields. They live in shacks that they have to pay for and are left on their own during hurricanes. I don't know who er are anymore. 😒
Similar thing happened less than a mile from where I lived, family farm turned industrial sized agribusiness, immigrant who worked power washing died in an enclosed tank. Patriarch of the family just built a new house supposedly north of a million $ farther away because the stench was so bad
This sickens me. We have a friend from Guatemala who came here to work. The work he does is not the work anyone else wants to do. He's the most unselfish person I know. That the elite consider the poor, the struggling, the disabled, the elderly, and immigrants expendable is deplorable.
I work plenty on haz sites, and farms ARE a haz site. No matter what you think or hear, people die tending herds. Sorry for this man and his family, but I bet there was no proper indoctrination or signage.
He died, pumping shit, largely because there aren’t enough white men around here willing to do that kind of work. These are the people who help make our nation function. Let some of these fuckwits in Washington pump shit for a month.
Oh damn, dude. I honestly don't know what to say there. Terrible way to go. I'm assuming there was uncercut safety guidelines and potential osha violations that led to his likely avoidable demise.
Yeah but if a white guy did that job there would have to be all kinds of safety measures put in and we all know how much that would cost. (Need sarcasm font)
This is awful. I’m so tired of the immigrant hating bullshit. We had two husband/wife teams who put a new roof on our house in 100 degree heat this summer. I’ve never seen people work harder in my life. It disgusts me how people who were born here only by dumb luck, can be so entitled & hateful.
More US resident workers have been killed by their jobs than in all the wars we have ever been involved with.
This working class hero joins legions of angels.
A true American.
This is frightful. This is why unions were formed and we all know that the possibility for reasonable health and safety protections are going to vanish in a puff of smoke on January 20.
The pigs are crowded on a slatted floor above a concrete sewage lagoon. All their waste ends up in there as a sludge. The sewage is pumped out periodically and used as fertilizer. It is horrendous.
Also safety training is impossible when there’s a language barrier.
I am sorry about his death. I am sorry for his family. My above post sounded so harsh and insensitive but that was just where my mind jumped 1st. I am always angry nowadays. I’m leaving the post instead of deleting it so I could apologize for my harshness.
A preventable fatality at the workplace.

Are Work Place Health & Safety Policies implemented, regularly audited/ certified in the US?
If a workplace accident occurs, what are the processes that follow - Investigation, Fin compensation for employee?
Irregularly audited.
I called OSHA once because I was struggling with a really dangerous situation at work and getting no where with management...
And OSHA told the company that I called them and I was fired.
Employees are the best watchdogs, and they can't safely report.
This is irresponsible.
Allowing unsafe work places to function is blatant disregard for employees. your experience is shocking @melodyleelacy.smokefleet.net; doubt that yours is an isolated incident.
Unsafe work places/No rights for workers/No universal health care/No gun safety ..etc
America?!
I’m not familiar with this tragic story, but it sounds like it might be more accurate to say that he succumbed to oxygen deprivation. I suspect he was in an atmosphere where the methane displaced the oxygen, and so he may have died from asphyxiation. Methane isn’t poisonous.
Thanks for sharing his tragic story. His life mattered. He was just trying to provide for his family! How some Americans look at him and all they have in their hearts is hate… it really pisses me off! RIP dear man!
They didn’t say he was undocumented- just that he was from Guatemala. But to answer your questions, employers are not jailed. At best they may get a fine. Without their demand there would be the supply.
100%,T.
That hog farmer needs to be charged with criminal negligence, Jack. This stuff is about failure by employers to provide a safe work environment.
He needs jail time as a deterrent to other dgaf employers.
It's like the contractor I know who uses undocumented people as his employees (because they "have skills Americans don't anymore") yet voted for Trump.
Getting rid of worker safety regulations will fix that problem. Along with not reporting incidents and we will have the safest work areas in the world!!!!😬

sad but true, now.
May he rest in peace 🙏🏻

The farmer did not care.

Where is OSHA?
Does Trump care? 🤷🏻♀️
May this young man Rest in Peace.

My condolences to his family. 😢

Disgusted American
It’ll be interesting to see who shovels shit after the immigrants are deported.
Also safety training is impossible when there’s a language barrier.
.. In all seriousness, that's is awful.

Of course this would never be tolerated in a safe European home.
- bacon for $0.01 less per pack
- the CEO to be paid millions
- CEOs getting unfathomably rich and maybe
- the immigrant to get harmed

Yet, Trump won Wisconsin’s rural vote by a margin of about 22.3 percentage points, a 2.4 point improvement over his 2020 performance.
It only serves greed
Godspeed, sir. You deserve way better than you got.
Just fuck them.
People will continue to be sacrificed for dollars.
