The album that really opened my eyes to how diverse metalcore can be as a genre is The Crimson Corridor by Zao.

Recommended to me by @negativejon.bsky.social

It blew my mind when I found out this was a facet of metalcore.

Crimson Corridor is just so DANK and droningly heavy in a way I'd never quite heard presented in that way before

Before I knew that it was considered metalcore, the best genre term I could conjure on my own for that album was "blackened sludge" with post-metal mixed in at points.

Very scattered so far. @negativejon.bsky.social has given me a tour because he's a real expert on Zao. They're so eclectic and have had so many "periods" and sounds and vocalists.

It sounded so different to any other Metalcore band at that time. Vocals sounded like he was in genuine agony and it was so much more darker sounding than anything else.

I don't have a tonne of metalcore recommendations apart from Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium, Ice Nine Kills, Killswitch Engage and Butcher Babies.

I LOVE metalcore; I play a lot of it on my show (but with the proviso that I need good clean vocals alongside the shoutie stuff). The music I've come across, fell in love with and play hits deep. I can physically feel it. The mix of passion and melody in that genre is my go-to.

I remember seeing them at Furnace Fest 2002 right before the Endless ep came out, so that version of the title track became my favorite. Going in cold and hearing that song back in that day was incredible.

I’m here for this and for more recs! Like other genres, it covers so much territory and variety over a lot of time. I even see people say “90s metalcore” throwback and I’m thinking like Earth Crisis or Hatebreed (mid-90s) and they’re thinking more Dillinger Escape Plan or Converge (late 90s).

Currents (more modern sound), Broken Vow (metallic hardcore), Serration (a bit more chaotic), Violent Life Violent Death (like old Zao but bleak), Chamber (mathy goodness), and the Embody the Chaos discography (just a fierce collection).

Even though the metalcore is died down quite a bit (they're leaning heavily into post-metal/sludge territory, and even then it's incredible), you can't go wrong with either of the two most recent Zao albums.

After the Burial is a fave, so is Make Them Suffer. Cant think of any other metalcores rn cause some bleed into deathcore like Emmure(all time fave) and Born of Osiris. Enjoy :)
