It might not be ideal in your mind, but actually it is a solution. It remains the current solution of the US federal agencies. Companies can argue while it's detectable in your system, your judgment is still impaired. I take issue with tobacco and alcohol being common exemptions
the solution would be legalizing all drugs and having systems in place to help people with addiction while also not punishing people or jailing people for drug use but straight edgers dont wanna hear this :^)
Seriously, yeah. I hardly ever drink any more and don't miss that queasy stomach feeling the next morning and have never skipped work because I got high the night before. And weed helps dull the stabby-stabby urges caused by living in the 4th Reich.
The only problem I have with it is people who smoke marijuana in their cars so others have to smell that nasty skunk odor. Smoke in your home. That's where it's legal.
We also gotta stop letting religious orgs be exempt from everyone else’s rules. Let Mormon missionaries get high! I am 100% willing to let a pair of Mormons tell me about Jesus hanging-out with Mayans on Meso-American pyramids if we can pass a bong while they do it.
It took me 53 years to finally stop smoking. I have COPD and have difficulty breathing. But you go ahead, keep smoking. Surely nothing will happen to you.
All smokers are rude... And will blow smoke to your face, smell bad and don't care if you don't like it, and will throw the end of cigarette butts on the floor.
You can smoke far from me and stay away from me with that stink.
They make cartridges for vapes now, it doesn't smell, like, at all. I also don't like it when people smoke regular bud and make the neighborhood smell bad.
Several of my bosses are smokers. I can perform my job more quickly if I'm blocked up, because of the time slowing thing. I'm not sure that they look the other way completely but I know they think if that's what it takes for me to be number one let's be number one.
I'll tell every job that thought they could dictate what I do on my off time.
"Take my hourly rate.. multiply it by 24, then multiply that by 7, pay me that every week and you can tell me what to do all day, until then you only have me for x hours today, and x hours tomorrow. That's why you pay me"
Weed should be treated just like alcohol: You can’t buy until you’re 21; you can’t smoke and drive, or operate machinery; if you get caught high on weed on the job, you can be fired for that infraction. That’s just common sense. Following the above & getting baked on your own time should be legal.
If you failed a breathalyzer at work you most certainly would get fired for drinking before your shift starts. To be clear, I don’t think that pot smokers should be fired for smoking on their own time & then failing a drug test, but the same thing definitely could happen with alcohol.
It’s honestly time people wise up and stop working for anything or anyone. Let these corporations eat shit. If you start getting hungry then literally eat the fn rich. Nothing will never change until the people decide to change it.
Legalize everything and the violence goes away
Cartels n smaller gangs will have nothing to profit off of
And the government is not meant to have that much control over your body
Seem to me that drug addicts all work in the highest levels of government these days
That’s what I say. Legalize everything. It will only work if it’s nationwide or else all the junkies will flock to one place like they did in Portland. Make rehab mandatory if you get caught using in public like Portugal did. Actually fix the problem.
Hard to believe this is even still up for debate in is this day and age. A “high” only lasts for about 4 hours and after eating/sleeping, the effects are practically nil, so what’s the big deal w/ what people do on their off-hours?
No, let’s put aside marijuana entirely, you can fail a test if you eat too many poppy seeds. That in a vacuum should disqualify losing your job over testing.
Though I agree with this post, I might quibble with the alcohol analogy.
Most employees are at will. With notable exceptions they can be fired for just about anything. Are we so sure an employer couldn’t require employees to be teetotalers?
It's on the same level as one I thought of years ago:
Addicted to Weed, Coke, Haroine, etc: You're a junkie and have failed yourself and society and are BAD
Addicted to Nicotine: You're a normal person, let's get you some more ciggs :)
That's how most Americans consume it. I was in a pot bar in Amsterdam, and there were other Americans there as well. They were smoking it without smoothing it with tobacco and every European in the place thought they were batshit crazy.
Yeah dude, I have a vape with a weed cart inside it. It's the only way I can get through college without blowing my brains out.
You get none of that "tar" or whatever people say through smoking with traditional weed. I only smoke like once a week and it takes me months to get through a cartridge.
Weed does not contain nicotine and, unless you mix them together, you dont have to smoke with nicotine. Just grind it, roll it/pack it, and light it up.
Not necessarily. Sometimes they do lots of therapy and finally put them on disability. If they don't want to up their insurance premiums they fire them early.
Casual drinkers aren’t alcoholics…
Casual pot smokers aren’t addicts. I haven’t touched weed or alcohol in months and I used to consume both daily.
It’s about the person and how prone they are to addictive behavior. Punishing everyone because some people don’t have self control is insane.
Exactly. I am so tired of this ridiculous double standard for marijuana smokers. If I am not high on the job, it is not relevant what I’m doing in my free time.
You asked. No. You pay for their time on the job. If insurance is an issue, then its another story. Insurance companies will enlarge anything to get out of their sales pitch promises. They will use it regardless of the quality of employee/employer relationships. Vaya con Dios
Or Pirro. Trump claims to hate alcohol because his brother was an alcoholic. But he hires a lot of full time drunks to work in his administration. Maybe it's just that people have to drink to dumb down enough to understand (or tolerate) the Donald.
Yes it should be illegal for them 2 fire someone for doing something on their own time, if not stated in the hiring or ethics policy
For that matter marijuana should be legalized it is nothing like alcohol which kills people which makes people dangerous at work which makes people not go into work
Cannabis is fat soluble, alcohol and other drugs are water soluble, which means that cannabis users will test positive for longer than other substances, sometimes for weeks beyond last use. Testing for presence is not an indication of impairment.
I think the question is whether they can accurately test whether or not someone has recently consumed it in the case of an incident. In a lot of industries, if you’re at work and have an accident, the first thing they do is test for drugs and/or alcohol use.
If they could test for impairment it would be safer. Of course, that would open a can of worms because people go to work with all kinds of impairments: prescription drugs, illnesses, sleepless nights, emotional trauma. Drug testing is done for safety but it misses most impairments.
Depends on what you mean by impaired. Yes I'm impaired when I get blocked up before work, but my productivity goes way up because of the time slowing property. Is that actually being impaired?
I was late to the party. For years I was Zappa-like about it. I had a rather stressful job end, and my leg was 3x its size with edema. I got an advertisement in the mail offering edibles when it became legal, and two of them "popped the balloon." As long as I can see my foot muscles I'm cool.
I tested for a job in California and got a call from a Kaiser Midwest testing facility that I had tested positive for cannabis. The woman seemed appalled. I told her it's legal here. I also told her to have a nice day. Told the employer I was "California sober." They said they don't care about pot.
Companies are not paying enough to be able to tell ppl what they can and can't do in their free time. ESPECIALLY if they live in or next to a state where it's legalized.
OK, but we're regular people. If you're in that sort of field, you are probably not the kind of person who would consider using that. Cops have one of the highest rates of alcohol abuse, though.
What employees do on their own time should be their own business. Drug testing in general has been a gross overreach for decades. It should be limited to impairment testing and only when someone is obviously impaired or caused an accident.
It all started with the Federal money given to businesses that could display "Drug Free Workplace" signs by drug testing. Weed smokers were and are the lowest hanging fruit. Cops and docs know it stays in your system. It's an easy bust.
Actually it started with Harry Anslinger in the 1930s using cannabis as an easy means to stigmatize Mexicana and blacks. Then Nixon doubled down with the DEA to go after anti war protestors etc.
Cannabis has never been illegal based on facts or relative harm, but rather propaganda and lies.
That passed in Califirnia a few years back. They cannot hold pre employment positive tests against you and you cannot be fired if you test and show it in your system while employed as long as you show no signs of impairment at work (except for DOT jobs and those that require fed level clearances).
It should be illegal to fire people for anything they do outside of work unless it involves a criminal arrest and conviction before the termination. Employment laws are state driven and vary though. If truck drivers get a speeding ticket in their personal vehicle they can lose their job.
And if people post or do stupid things on line they can be fired too. Republican lawmakers seem to expect a pass though. Probably because they do and say stupid things when they are working too.
Most of the use of any intoxicant, is for recreational purposes. Those that are addicted, should be offered treatment, to afford them a better life.
It’s that simple. Addiction will cause problems, in all aspects of life. Casual use does not.

Seems sane to me.
You can smoke far from me and stay away from me with that stink.
And I hate drunk people too.
"Take my hourly rate.. multiply it by 24, then multiply that by 7, pay me that every week and you can tell me what to do all day, until then you only have me for x hours today, and x hours tomorrow. That's why you pay me"
If the NATC's want to ban marijuana they need to ban alcohol too. 😜
Next up: ED drugs. 😂

Rob a store?-fire them
Beat their spouse?-fire them
Get caught driving while intoxicated? That one is a fine line.
Spout hate speech? Fire them

No one dies from smoking too much weed. Just a big nap.
It’s a long list 💀

PS , in Canada we legalized Marijuana.
For that matter marijuana should be legalized it is nothing like alcohol which kills people which makes people dangerous at work which makes people not go into work
If you were to tie one on, and then go to work and get popped for a test, anything above zero is grounds to lose your license.
Make it public
There is some variance with alcohol, but cannabis can be orders of magnitude difference between users in terms of what levels cause impairment.
I can smoke a joint and be 100% fine while my inexperienced friend can't walk.
I believe Cannabis was helping treat most of my ADHD symptoms for years. Definitely can help focus and slow things down for people.
