I've unfortunately seen them firsthand and the scary thing is that it's a pipeline. They get roped into it saying it's about supporting "mental illness". Then they start to take pride in being an "anti-contact paraphile", which is the step you're talking about. Then it snowballs from there.

They were at least 20 years older than me (I was 19 or 20 at the time, so no big deal) and I assumed it was an older fur thing because nobody I knew online my age was ok with it.

I think it was a case of they were zoos first, and then the fandom came along for them.
