Ah, the politically unifying power of a bad example that hits your wallet and threatens your population with uncontrolled epidemics. I wonder how soon Musk throws him under the bus to win favors with electorate and replaces him with a less obvious nazi idiot that knows how not to bankrupt companies.
The most liberal pope they might elect (i) will have at best limited real effect on politics and government worldwide and (ii) will still be far too conservative for my tastes.
Yes, but that is the best that can be hoped for at this juncture. Do you prefer to make the perfect the enemy of the "well that's all we have to work with at the moment"?
You are quite correct. Mostly I'm venting about how we have these wonderful, humane religious leaders like the Pope or the Dali Lama who offer insightful guidance and then we watch our political leaders and, far too often, those who follow those religious leaders doing exactly the opposite.
Canada and Australia’s election results have won them a respite, like our 2020 election did for us. I’m just hoping they don’t get complacent and blow it like we did.
The liberals (the losing party) in Australia will do what they do every time they lose, think they didn't go far enough right. With this big a margin it'll be hard for them to get back in one three-year cycle
The Republicans in the US also typically have the same reaction...they always say they needed a more overtly fascist platform to turn out Their voters. But Felontrump's big lie solved that problem, & made talk of someone more extreme unnecessary.
I mean after Obama's first win they spoke so much about needing to create a big tent and then Romney was probably the most progressive they put up since Reagan, but they still lost so they went back to doing what they love.
After the RNC autopsy of Obama's victory, McCain & Rubio led a bipartisan Senate Immigration reform bill to pass, but because Limbaugh & the Tea Party opposed it, Boehner wouldn't allow a House vote, where it could have won. & Marco renounced it.
