Precisely because it undermines and ignores the importance of community. A small, close-knit community working together can survive nearly anything; individuals working only for their own ends will starve and die in the first winter.

You'd need, at a minimum, people with knowledge about farming and animal husbandry. That shit isn't easy; it requires very specific, very technical knowledge and skills. And then you'd probably want at least one large animal vet, if not two, just for backup. And their staff.

Then don't forget about people doctors. At least one GP would be good, if not two, and some nurses. And you'd need equipment/space for them to work, so build that into your budget.

And once you'd recruited them, you'd also want to recruit other professionals, like butchers to handle the processing of your animals, foresters or hunters for taking game/fish, labor to help you work your farm, etc. Oh, and a mechanic or two to keep your vehicles in working order.

"Alone" is fantastic for puncturing the myth of the rugged individual. It really shows how hard it is to get sufficient calories, and how susceptible an individual is to injury. And boy do they usually eat a lot of rat.

That whole thing is pretty funny to someone (me) coming from somewhere like the UK.

My guy, our entire country hasn't been self-sufficient in food for about 2 centuries and being a farmer usually suuuucks!
