I use machine learning for physics, and in my professional opinion half the advantage ML gives you in science is the ridiculous amount of time *you* spend looking at the data making sure that your dumb-ass ML algorithm isn't doing something stupid to it.

There are really interesting things that were impossible before ML! We will have a new measurement of dark matter in the Galaxy out Real Soon Now that is ML-based. But we spent *over a year* understanding the errors in our method, and our data is *only* a few million stars in the Milky Way.

As a tried 30-year IT guy, I concur with this assessment. Remember "The Cloud" and all the great change it was going to bring? It. Did. Not. Client-Server architecture had been around for decades. It was simply a way for yet more transition of resources from local control to TechBro control.
