The Confederate States of America was one of the most brutal, repressive regimes in history. Like Nazi Germany, for all its talk of freedom for the upper racial caste, anyone who even sympathized with the lower castes was killed.

Sherman and Sheridan both say this. Sherman during the war in several dispatches and Sheridan towards the end of the war and during his tenure as military governor of Louisiana. These men KNEW you would continue to have a nation divided unless the Confederacy was ripped out root and stem.
