Lisa Murkowski in today’s New York Times said how nervous she and many others in Congress are about Trump going after payback when members of the Republican Party don’t toe the line. She has always been her own person. We all know how bad Trump is, but this article really hit home about him.

They would vote the same way again right now.

Political parties play a lot of functions in a democracy. One of them is that it extends political time horizons. Congressional Party leaders have ambitions that extend well beyond a single presidency. Party leaders are concerned about success over the short and long terms. 2/x

Trump has killed all the parts of the party that should care about the long term—congressional leaders, party organization, fundraising, etc. Republican fundraising was almost entire a few major donors last cycle (Elon, Adelson). This is a huge long term problem 4/x

My point is, the entire party has oriented itself around Trump, who fundamentally does not care about anyone outside himself. This dynamic is leading Republican MCs to engage in behavior that looks electorally damaging. The guardrails that protect the party’s long term interests are gone 6/x

It is a fascinating if not massively destructive turn of events. There is a strong chance that the Trump party could be around for the next twenty years. Look at Hungary under Orbán. The party is only broken from a classical deterministic perspective.

As a fascist organization, it is the opposite of broken, and in fact mind numbingly effective. The goal is the centralization of all power under the executive branch, and to render the judicial branch and the legislative branch fully castrated, and then to work on eliminating voting.
