Social media is a social forum. Just as we don't worry about country clubs, golf clubs, BDSM clubs, bowling clubs, etc being 'echo chambers', there is no reason people should have to open their Social Media feeds to NAZIs.

But what about academic forums? Does the same argument apply?

Clearly, that argument does not apply. Academic forums should not be echo chambers but that doesn't mean they should be a free-for all where anyone can say anything and keep saying it to drown out the rest trying to talk.

We faced that problem on USENET when the net.NAZIs called.

Academic forums have rules and there is an expectation that people are going to participate in good faith. You can get kicked out for plagiarism or for faking results. We don't let people claiming aliens built the pyramids talk over archeologists presenting their work studying them.

Academia is not an echo chamber but that doesn't mean academics are obliged to platform right wing ideologues who only bring hate to the table.

Barri Weiss first spent her time trying to get academics fired for professoring while Muslim. Now she whines she is cancelled.

I actually stopped going to parties in my 30s because too many mouthy disrespectful assholes were there, too.
