The tradition is possibly tied to the pagan festival of Beltane, a celebration of renewal. Across cultures & centuries, May celebrations included floral traditions, symbolizing love, resilience & abundance. In ancient Rome, the festival of Floralia was held to honor the Goddess of flowers/fertility.

I live in a very colonial city. I've been going to the May Day celebration for 40 years. It's a beautiful ode to spring...and a delightful reminder that there are gentle days to be joyful.
